Many popular CMS’s (including WordPress) automatically utilize RSS to publish content, which is a great way to allow users to collect and read content on their own. The downside to RSS is it can be difficult to track exactly who reads your content via RSS. My friend Josh Ledford has written a great article on how to track WordPress RSS feeds in Google Analytics.
RSS feeds typically contain some of your most loyal followers, so setting up RSS feed tracking is a great way to monitor and see what content and events occur with those users.
I’d recommend setting up a few custom segments in Google Analytics once this is in place to help see the RSS readership:
- one segment that includes just your RSS readers
- one segment that excludes just your RSS readers
- one segment where the user exited to your RSS feed via an event
These should yield tremendous insight to your Google Analytics reports.
Josh’s website doesn’t seem to exist any more. Do you have another source to look at?
Hi Walt, it looks like it’s back now. Not sure what happened – gremlins maybe?
